WHAT HAPPENS? You meet your therapist and are taken into a private therapy room. You lie on a therapy table - these are like massage tables - while the therapist applies various lotions and creams to your face. You don't have to, but if you wish, you can take your shirt off and get underneath a duvet or towel for warmth.
Most likely the therapist will explain the stages of the treatment - these can include exfoliation, cleansing, moisturising and any masks. During the facial the therapist may also wax or pluck your stray hairs if you've asked for this to be included.
"Once the guys lie down and you give them a quick neck and shoulder massage, they realise that this isn't quite so bad," says Magdalena Claasen, a senior therapist at SAS Clinic in Newmarket, Auckland. "In fact," she laughs, "once a guy comes in for a facial for the first time, they're hooked for life. Most of them are surprised; they never realised how relaxing this can be."
DOES IT HURT? Not at all. In fact, it's a bit of a treat. The waxing may give you a twinge of pain as hairs are pulled, but that bit is all over in seconds.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? Your skin feels great for days afterwards. And while some men have a facial treatment once a month, others do it just once a year. Over to you really.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? An hour-long facial - 598.50. A 45-minute facial - $65. CONTACT: SAS Clinic - Phone: (09) 524 9211 or visit
TIPS: You'll get better results if you shave the morning before your treatment. While you're in there, feel free to ask your therapist about what's best for your type of skin so you can start looking after
Joy's tips for holistic beauty:
1. There is no disputing that the simple power of touch is the healing balm for the body and the soul.
2. Massaging, stroking and kneading the body trigger an array of physical reactions, boosting circulation and releasing endorphins that promote a sense of wellbeing. You'll feel those benefits whether you are having a scalp massage, soothing facial, stress relieving back massage, body exfoliation, reflexology to the feet, followed by an extreme pedicure, or a luxurious paraffin dip followed by a full professional manicure.
3. Taking time out for a facial, massage or other relaxing treatment is a great way to relieve stress and recharge your batteries so we are able to cope with the ever-increasing pressures of everyday life.
4. Our skin is the largest, and one of the most important organs in the body. Like all living things our skin requires nourishment to stay healthy and carry out repairs when damaged.
5. A wide variety of nutrients are needed to maintain healthy skin including essential fatty acids, B complex, vitamin A, zinc, vitamin C, and minerals including selenium and silica.
6. Nuts and seeds such as almonds, walnuts, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds, along with figs, prunes and apricots are all excellent skin foods.

| Grooming and skin care is no longer the exclusive domain of women. For the past 10 years, men have been paying more attention to their skin care and spend on average almost as much time grooming as women do. |
| The growing trend of men's lifestyle features in fitness and health magazines has contributed to the growth in men's grooming acceptability and awareness. As is rugby, racing and beer, caring for their skin, and maintaining an attractive physical profile for the average male has become an important and acceptable part of what it means to be a man. |
| Men have distinct skin care needs. They generally have oilier skin due to their larger pore structure, daily shaving often demands special attention to the needs of the skin. |
| American men account for almost one in four cosmetic surgeries according to Fortune magazine. The number two motivator for men seeking cosmetic surgery, is their job, but men are most motivated to visit a dermatologist for treatment and advice on their appearance because they want to "do this for themselves", with romantic interest ranking a close third. |
| Influenced heavily by fashion magazines and personalities, men's grooming market is experiencing a healthy growth. American men spend $9.5 billion a year on their appearance; grooming products alone generate $3.3 billion in sales. |
| Phillippe Dumont, owner of the Nickel Male beauty salon, which opened in May 1996 in the Marais district says. "(But) over the last two years there's been a complete media explosion of the male body. Every advertising poster shows a half naked man with not a hair on him. A woman switches on the television and sees the band "2 Be 3", then looks at the man in her bed and realizes there is a difference, but she tells her man to go to something about it. The real champion of the trend in male beauty, however, has got to be the gay population, which has forged the way in increasing body awareness, flesh exposure and male cosmetic consumption. |
